Saturday, March 17th, 2007Wooden “Castles and “Forts”
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007I don’t know as much about castles as I do their former inhabitants, but I know enough. The very first “Castle” was just a wooden wall built around our ancestors homes and farms to protect themselves from hostile tribes and wild animals. All over the world on small islands (during the bronze age) small villages with wooden walls were being built. These walls were mainly built near rivers, so the inhabitans could easily go fishing for food. each village had a group of around 20 rectangular houses built on stilts to cope with seasonal flooding. since wood rots and decays over a long time every 40 or so years the village inhabitants would move to a diffrent area and construct new village.
Many early “Forts” weren’t made out of stone. They were built on the earth on which they stood, piled up into huge ramparts several ft. high an example of this is Maiden Castle. Evauntually Forts and Castles started to be made out of stone. Western Europe: during A.D. 900s. Unfortunately I currently don’t know the dates of when other countries started to use stone, but I will soon.
