July 4th Parade!

The July 4th Independence Parade in Philly was amazing! I had so much fun there, there were so many people and the excitement and level of activity was just amazing. I was in the parade with the 6th USCT and we were joined by members of our fellow regiment the 3rd USCT. Altogether there were about 20 of us. The Parade was really a grand affair, there were so many participants that one couldn’t see where the the line paraders began or ended, and the sidewalks were absolutely filled with onlookers, it was awesome! It felt really good to be in the parade, despite the long walk, which really didn’t bother me too much, it was great!

Here’s a video of the parade, the USCT come in at about 3:56

What’s the deal Sony?

I find it a bit annoying that I am still not able to make a gamebattles team for myself. This is due solely to the fact that I cannot connect gamebattles to psn to put in my psn tag. Sony is still having problems with login things and I really wish they would be quicker in fixing them.

Atticus as a parent, English assignment

December 17, 2010

It’s never easy for someone to be a parent, specific a single parent. They are faced with many issues that they must deal with on their own. They must provide an education for their children , instill morales in them, teach them about the world, make most of their decisions for them when they’re still young, ultimately they must care for their children and make sure they’re happy and have the best possibly lives. Every parent hopes for nothing but the best for their kids. However, doing all that isn’t as easy as it may seem, and especially not when one has to do it alone. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus, the father of the narrator Scout, and Jem, is a single parent and do everything expected of a parent while also dealing with many personal life issues.

In the novel, Atticus has a few things which he strongly tries to impress on his children. And, not only does he verbally attempt to do so, he also hopes they will learn from his actions. He hopes that they will never respond to anyone in a physical manner, that they will instead, conduct themselves in a proper fashion, and respond with calmness. “Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him… Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and let Mr. Ewell call him names,” (Lee, 291). Atticus was practically attacked, and yet he didn’t engage with his aggressor, he just remained calm and passive, something he would want his kids to do if they ever found themselves in a situation. Atticus feels that one should give people a chance to get out whatever they need to, and things will settle down soon enough. Atticus also maintains that one shouldn’t judge others because of the way they do things. People come from all different places, backgrounds, religions, so just because a certain person or people do things one way, doesn’t mean that all other people’s ways are wrong. “You never really understand person until you consider things from his point of view – until climb into his skin and walk around in it,” (Lee, 39).

Atticus was pretty effective in inducing his lessons in his kids. “Atticus said I had learned many things today, and Miss Caroline had learned several things herself. She had learned not to hand something to a Cunningham, for one thing, but if Walter and I had put ourselves into her shoes we’d have seen it was an honest mistake on her part. We could not expect her to learn all Maycomb’s ways in one day, and we could not hold her responsible when she knew no better,” (Lee, 39-40). Scout understands and accept Atticus’ teaching, to not be prejudice or look down upon others for what they do, right away, because he presented it to her in a way she could understand, and she did. Another of Atticus’ teachings, one which Miss Jean-Louise(Scout) learns throughout the book, was the most important, it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. However, Scout doesn’t only learn it from Atticus, the lesson comes from all different sources in the novel. “Mr. Underwood simply figured it was a sin to kill cripples, be they standing, sitting, or escaping,” (Lee, 323).

Atticus felt that if he hadn’t done all the things he did, he wouldn’t be able to face his children. He knew that to be able to teach them all he did, he had to live up to a certain standard of morals and ideals. He couldn’t do one thing and next teach his children to do differently. Ultimately, he was successful in instilling all he possibly could into his children. He really made them understand whatever it was he trying to convey whether by what he did, or explaining things to them plainly in ways they could understand. Atticus is a good father to his kids.

FBI, English assignment

March 2, 2011

Section I

The FBI is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI was created in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. It began as a corps of special agents, secret service and detectives, which had neither a name nor an official leader other than the attorney general. Eventually though, ten former Secret Service agents, and a number of Department of Justice peonage became investigators of the Department of Justice. On July 26, 1908, Bonaparte ordered them to report to Chief Examiner Stanley W. Finch. This action is celebrated as the beginning of the FBI. In March 1909, when Roosevelt and Bonaparte had completed their terms, they both recommended that the force of by then 34 agents, become a permanent part of the Department of Justice. Bonaparte’s successor, Attorney General George Wickersham, named the force the Bureau of Investigation on March 16, 1909, and the title of chief examiner was changed to the title of chief of the Bureau of Investigation. At first, there were few federal crimes. The early Bureau mainly did investigations regarding violations of laws involving national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust, peonage, and land fraud. The job of the Bureau became more important and serious in June 1910, after a law was passed making it illegal to transport women over state lines for immoral purposes. The Bureau’s importance increased so much, that over the next few years, the number of special agents grew to more than 300, which were complemented by another 300 support employees. The Bureau was very important with the entry of the US into World War I. It was the Bureau’s job to conduct acts of espionage and sabotage acts, as well as assisting the Department of Labor by investigating enemy aliens. The FBI’s main objective is to serve as both a federal criminal investigation body, and a domestic intelligence agency.

Section II

At the time the FBI originated, most federal crimes were actually handled by cities, counties or states. However, with easier ways to travel and communicate, it made it more possible for the federal government to actually handle federal crimes, and an institution like the FBI was the perfect force to do that. During the progressive era, which was from roughly 1800 to 1918, the progressive generation felt government intervention was necessary to produce justice in an industrial society. Roosevelt and Bonaparte, two similar-minded progressives, both favored the creation of a force that would do just that, produce justice in an industrial society. The FBI really increased the power of the federal government. It gave the federal government more control, and it made it more able to keep track of crime. It also took power away from cities, counties and states though, because they no longer could handle federal crimes, they were now restricted to handling illegal activities strictly within their jurisdiction. The FBI also created an image of law enforcers that portrayed them as “cool,” and mysterious. The FBI also gave way to a whole new genre of movies. And through movies, law enforcement, espionage, spying, and the whole secretive business became exciting and outrageously interesting to society!

Section III

Still to this day, one can see how popular the FBI and other law enforcing government agencies are in American culture. Countless movies are out and still coming out about secret agents doing extraordinary things. There are even T.V. shows made about them. The FBI has really had a lasting affect on American society. It’s difficult to think how different it would be if it wasn’t around. There would be a whole lot of movies and T.V. shows not around. Not to mention, a lot of federal crimes would be handled differently. People might not take their local governments so seriously and they wouldn’t heed to federal law, because there would be no higher power to step in if the local law enforcement couldn’t handle things. There would also be more corruption within other federal institutions. Without the FBI, there would be no one to check other government institutions to make sure they are not engaging in illegal activities, and sticking to their designated jobs. There would even be a lack of espionage to gather information on our nation’s enemies and internal security during wartime because there would be no force around to handle the task.

The Catcher in the Rye Persuasive Essay

The Catcher in the Rye Persuasive Essay

Students should not be forced to read materials such as The Catcher in the Rye that influence them so negatively. The book should be banned from school curriculums. It is includes nothing but suicidal, depressing and alcohol and smoking related references. Books like this one should instead be replaced with books that are more inspiring, more motivational, and overall just more positive.

Chiefly, teens deal with enough depressing issues in their lives, reading a book whose main character is a teen who expresses depression all the time isn’t good for the psychological health of teens. Throughout the entire book, the character Holden says he is depressed, or that something makes him depressed countless times, “I had to pack these brand new ice skates my mother had practically just sent me a couple of days before. That depressed me,” (Salinger 51-52).”If somebody, some girl in an awful-looking hat, for instance, comes all the way to New York-from Seattle, Washington, for G-d’s sake-and ends up getting up early in the morning to see the G-ddamn first show at Radio City Music Hall, it makes me so depressed I can’t stand it,” (Salinger 75). Holden almost never expressed positive emotions. Just reading the book, about such a negative person makes the reader feel negative.

Comparatively, Students also have to deal with a lot of stress in their lives, suicidal thoughts usually come with a lot of stress, and being made to read a book about a kid around students’ age with suicidal thoughts only serves to give teens the idea and further their problems. “I got up and went over and looked out the window. I felt so lonesome, all of a sudden. I almost wished I was dead,” (Salinger 48). “I wasn’t sleepy or anything, but I was feeling sort of lousy. Depressed and all. I almost wished I was dead,” (Salinger 90). “What I really felt like, though, was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window,” (Salinger 104).

Similarly, teens have enough influences in their own lives to smoke or begin drinking, and there are many smoking and alcohol references in the book which aren’t beneficial to students. “I ordered a scotch and soda, which is my favorite drink, next to frozen Daiquiris. If you were only around six years old you could get liquor at Ernie’s. You could even be a dope fiend and nobody’s care, (Salinger 85). “Boy, I sat at that G-damn bar till around one o’clock or so, getting drunk as a bastard. I could hardly see straight,” (Salinger 150). “I was sort of out of breath. I was smoking so damn much, I had hardly any wind. She wasn’t even out of breath,” (Salinger 176).

In the final analysis, all of the above mentioned items are nothing but negative things that can influence still young developing minds. Students shouldn’t be forced to read materials such as this. Again, instead they should be reading motivational and inspirational works that would influence them in positive ways.

“Rewrite History,” To Kill a Mockingbird, English assignment

“Jem,” I said, “are those the Ewells sittin’ down yonder?”
“Hush, said Jem, “Mr. Heck Tate’s testifyin’.”
I looked more in the direction of Judge Taylor and saw Mr. Tate takin’ his seat. He had dressed up nice for the occasion, wearing the traditional business suit and looking surprisingly ordinary. I then looked and saw Mr. Gilmer getting out of his seat to begin questioning Mr. Tate. Mr. Gilmer was growing bald, and it showed. He also had a cast in one of his eyes which gave him an advantage over others. He could make it seem as if he were looking at you with close scrutiny even if he wasn’t. It make most people a bit uncomfortable to feel like they’re really being examined and thus makes them seem to pay more close attention. As I looked on down at Mr. Gilmer and Mr. Tate I could hear a few people here and there, fanning themselves with whatever they could, or sighing from the immense heat, which you noticed had everybody already broken out in sweat. The sweat wouldn’t be so bad, though it brought a foul stench with it, and the cigarette smoke didn’t help at all. I averted my attention back to the two men sitting in front of the judge. Mr. Gilmer began questioning Mr. Tate, about what had happened, to recount the events of the night from his view. Mr. Tate said that Mr. Ewell had fetched him, telling him that a nigger had raped Mayella, so he ran back there and he found her laying on the floor banged up pretty good. Her and Bob told Mr. Tate Tom Robinson had done it. So then Mr. Tate arrested Mr. Robinson. From where I was standing it didn’t seem like Mr. Tate was lying. I couldn’t see why he would, and it seemed obvious that the negro had done it. After all, he was ‘just’ a negro, and that’s the sort of thing they’re capable of doing.

USCT 6th Colored Troop

I am glad to write, that I just came home from parading in the Township of Union with the 6th USCT Colored Troop re-enactors! A couple months ago, after attending a bike summit in Trenton, NJ, my family and I went right across the street to the Trenton barracks, where there was a tribute to black soldiers going on for black history month. Outside the barracks, we met a soldier who had served in the Vietnam war and my mom and I stayed outside a while to chat with him, he was a nice man and I enjoyed talking to him. When he left, we went inside. It turns out the people hosting the tribute were from the 6th Colored Troop. We spent a lot of time there, talking to them, learning, and taking things in. I was especially interested, being that I am somewhat of a history buff, and I am especially interested in military history. My mom ended up speaking with some of the guys, and got there contact information. Now, normally, when I meet people, even if I am interested in what they are doing, I fail to follow up. However, these guys were really friendly and welcoming. They allowed people to hold the equipment they brought with them, and they had no problem answering as many questions as you had, and sharing their abundant information with you. All this made me feel really comfortable around them. So, when I went home, I asked my mom to contact them for me to see how I could get involved.

Well, a few weeks later, Sergeant Ward e-mailed my mother and let her know about a battle that was going on in Pennsylvania, and asked her if I wished to go with him. I do not have any equipment, or any Civil War period attire, but it was no problem. If one does not have it, they lend it! All I had to do was get down to Trenton. I was definetley in, and my mom was happy to see me really want to get involved with something, so she was glad to take me.

Here I am with Sgt. Al Ward in Civil War uniforms

The day of the event, we drove down to Trenton, met up with Sergeant Ward, and then me and him went on down to the event in PA. We were there for a good part of the day, and I honestly had a lot of fun, I was suited up, the Sergeant let me carry his musket, we toured both the Union and Confederate camps, watched the battle, met some people, and just had a blast. Interestingly enough, out of about a couple thousand people there, we were two of the few colored people there. And because that particular battle that was being re-enacted took place before colored soldiers officially fought in the Civil War in 1863, we did not participate in the battle, was it was still good to watch.

Today, I was in the parade with some guys from the 6th and even though it was really hot, I still had a lot of fun. Doing this stuff is a blast for me, and I intend to keep doing it.

Military in sports

A few weeks ago I attended the National Conference for Media Reform in Boston, MA. I found the conference really interesting, I feel I learned a lot from it. The speakers, panels, and workshops held, I can honestly say were all very good. One thing that really caught my attention was one of the workshops I attended. The workshop was a documentary made by David Zirin, it was called, Not Just a Game The documentary thoroughly analyzed all the different aspects of what things influence sports, what sports influence, and what goes on in sports besides just playing the game. I especially was interested at the section that talked about how the military influence sports, and offers a lot of subliminal messaging in it. From holding a military performance before, after, or in the middle of a game, to parachuting soldiers into the stadium, the military heavily influences sports. I was not so sure that this was true, Yeah, sure I see some military advertisements sometimes when I watch games, bet I have not seen actually military personnel performing or doing some kind of stunt. However, just the other day my brother was watching a baseball games on T.V. To my surprise, when I walked in the room, there were two soldiers being parachuted into the stadium! I wonder what is up with this, why does the military stick its hand into sports so much? Just some food for thought.

Newark Peace Conference

A coupe weeks ago I attended the Newark Peace Conference. It was held at NJPAC, it was extremely interesting! The conference had a host of interesting and famous people all with brilliant idea and information. Despite, at first not wanting to go, after being there, I was really glad I did. I got to see the Da Lai Lama, actually I got within about 50 feet from him! It was an amazing experience, the panels and workshops were very informative, and mind-opening. Even the NJPAC building was a wonder in itself, the auditorium was huge, and it was beautiful! I am just really glad I attended, it was a good way to spend my weekend.

What is going on Sony?!

So Thursday morning I woke up, laid in bed for a few minutes, then decided to turn over, grab my Universal TV remote and my PS3 controller. One great thing about the PS3 is the fact that I don’t have to even get up to turn it on or off, same thing with the the TV remote! Anyway, so I turn my PS3, and usually when I turn it on, I get the little notification that I have been signed into the PlayStation network. However, this time it gave me a notification that my sign in had failed, or something to that effect. Naturally, I went to sign in again, because I am about to get online and start kickin’ butt in Call of Duty right? Wrong, my sign in failed again, it gave me an error message and told me I had been signed out of the PlayStation network. Really? What’s going on here? I started to panic a little bit, did something happen to my account? Why can I not sign in?! After sitting there and attempting to sign in a few more times, I went onto Facebook to see if any of my friends with PS3 were having problems. To my happy surprise, I found out it wasn’t just me, thank G-d. Although, I was still pretty angry that I couldn’t sign in. I went to check the PlayStation website and found the same thing my friend had told me, that the whole network was done, and that It’d be another day or two before service was back up and running. Well, This is already the fifth day, and I am pretty unhappy about it. To my knowledge, Sony has not released any information as to why they initially suspended the network, but they say they are currently fixing the problem, and taking steps to strengthen security so this won’t happen again. I hope the wait is worth it!
